Trek to Kudremukh Observatory

The Observatory is located in the Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka, India. It is situated at an altitude of 1,892 metres (6,207 ft) above sea level. The observatory is operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA).The Kudremukh Observatory was established in 1977. It houses a 1.2-metre (47 in) telescope, which is used for research in stellar and extragalactic astrophysics. The telescope is also used for monitoring of variable stars and for the search for new variable stars.

The observatory is named after the Kudremukh peak, which is located nearby. The peak is one of the highest points in the Western Ghats.

Explore Fortified Villages in Kudremukh

Important thing to keep in mind before going for kudremukh trek–

  • Kudremukh trek needs permission . It is a part of national park ( Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka). The entry fee is Rupees 600 per person. Only the first 50 people are given permission in a day. 

Travel route for kudremukh trekking:

1. First you have to reach the Forest office and get permission for the trek .From the forest office to Ontimara 2 will be the first stretch(forest area and the grasslands). You even get to cross a stream in between. Surely carry your trekking boots to avoid any problems!

2. Travel from Ontimara 2 the final peak with the team. You get to view amazing scenarios , after reaching the kudremukh peak.
